These carved house posts are typical of both Tlingit and Tsimshian houses and were probably the prototype for the carved interior central poles favoured by many Haida chiefs. Their placement at the centre of the house under the peak of the roof allowed them to be up to 5.5 m (18 feet) tall, as in Chief Skidegate's house.The Haida Chief Skulka had a house frontal pole in Howkan, Alaska with a European figure on the top. This is one of several Haida poles from Southeast Alaska that included figures of Europeans. Much speculation has occurred as to the meaning of these figures. Haida sculptures range from tall totem poles to the equally complex carved handles of horn spoons. This ability to express artistic concepts over a range of sizes and forms has attracted the admiration of art afficionados worldwide.

For the Tlingit tribe mortuary poles are given as wedding gifts to be placed outside the home of the newlyweds (“Tlingit” American History). “Wood carving was probably the preeminent Bella Coola art. Masks, entry poles, house frontal poles (with entry through a gaping mouth), and carved posts were often painted and decorated with crest figures.

The house poles and three of the four free-standing Haida poles were carved between 1958-1962 by Bill Reid with the assistance of Douglas Cranmer of the Nimpkish Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwagiutl) band of Alert Bay. The fourth free standing pole, a copy of a Masset house frontal pole, was carved by Jim M. Hart, a Masset Haida, under Reid's guidance.

The Red Mill Totem House in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood is a landmark beloved by locals and tourists. Despite its popularity and well-known history, the identity of the carvers who made the frontal pole and corner posts has been misrepresented for years.

Records indicate a collection of well over two hundred Haida pieces held at the Chicago Field Museum, including ten model houses and fourteen plus model poles out of a collection of twenty-nine houses and forty plus poles made by Haida artists for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
