Early Spring is perhaps the most controversial of all of Chinese painter Guo Xi’s landscape paintings. It was completed in 1072 and to the casual observer would seem a simple, yet highly detained landscape painting of mountains, trees and a waterfall.Guo Xi is one of the leading cultural figures from the Song Dynasty period. Born and raised in the Henan province, Xi was a highly educated man, a scholar-official, a theoretician of painting whose essay titled “The Lofty Message of Forest and Streams” influenced many generations of Chinese painters.Guo Xi, one of the most famous artists of the Northern Song period in China. Guo’s collected notes on landscape painting, Linquan Gaozhi (“Lofty Record of Forests and Streams”), describes with much detail the purposes and techniques of painting and is a valuable aid to understanding the landscape.
Guo Xi (Wade-Giles romanization Kuo Hsi), like fellow Chinese artist Yi Yuanji lived during the Song Dynasty. He was born around 1020 and died around 1090.
